The Deep Freeze is upon us here on the Prairies.  It has been -20 to -30 Celsius for a couple weeks but up until then we had been having one of the warmest winters ever.  The temperatures were around the freezing point right through Christmas and the big part of Lake Manitoba opened up, which is quite rare for this time of year.  Fortunately my brother and I were not fishing in that area yet.  Since then we have had lots of cold weather and no snow.  Where there was open water on Christmas Eve, there is now 24- 27 inches of ice!

My Dad came out just as the lake was freezing up and he was as excited as Dustee was to get out on the lake.  It has been a long time since my Dad has been on the ice the first day!

We have had many Bluebird days this winter with no wind.  The perfect day is a calm minus 20 day!

There was no snow until pretty late into the fall so I didn’t start trapping very early  but had some luck right away catching this nice Pine Marten.
