Hockey!!

Here we are at Ashern, Last tournament of the year

We are a hockey family, Rena is the one who keeps us all organized, we are at a rink usually 5 or 6 days a week.  Maija is a first year Atom and I coach.  We had a rough start to the season but by the end of the season we were winning a lot of games, came in second in our last tournament of the year

too.  One thing Maija’s team did do was set a record for the longest game in Interlake Minor Hockey
history. We went to FIVE overtimes against St. Laurent!!! That is EIGHT periods of hockey.  They did not have much gas left in the tank after that one!!  We lost that game at the end of the fifth OT on a shot from the point.  And yes Game 2 went to OT as well, this time we came out on the winning end in the SECOND OT.  It was good hockey, we ended up losing the series in the third game but not for lack of effort.  Maija also played on the peewee girls team for a few games with Taina this season, it was nice to be able to watch both girls on the same line.

Taina plays on two teams, the peewee boys team, which has body contact and the peewee girls team.  Her boys team went undefeated in Provincials this year, but only came away with the consolation.  They had two ties in the round robin and won the rest. Just bad luck in the draw.  The two teams thay tied played for the gold.   It was nice to watch her play this season,  she was more confident and was not afraid to play the body. Her girls team did not fair so well at Provincials. They did not win a game. There was some very good hockey there and the other girls teams were dominant.  It was a good weekend though, lots of fun.

John’s team the Lundar Falcons finished sixth this season in an eight team league.  We met our rivals from Pequis, the Hawks.  We played game one in the Peguis arena on a Saturday night.  It was a wild one, and tied with 2 minutes to go when my old teammate from my Peguis days, “Manchu” took a shot from the point and hit the goal post.  The rebound went to another old teammate, “Slippery” Sam Spence.  He buried the rebound and that was it.  We had a lot of chances after that and just could not put it in.  The crowd was absolutley insane in there.  I love games like that.  That was to be the last game ever played in Peguis arena.  On Monday
morning the arena caught fire and was destroyed.  Too bad, I Loved playing in that barn, Loud, boards made a lot of noise when you hit someone and the crowd was always crazy loud.  They cheered when you got hit, they cheered when their players got hit, and cheered even louder when the Referee fell on his ass.LOL  Next game was in Lundar, we were down four to one going into the third period when we started to come back.  We kept chipping away at their lead and eventually tied it up with a minute left to go.  Away we go to OT.  Again I did not fair to well in OT.  Marty Favel stole the puck off our defenceman and went on a breakaway, it was over.
There was still game three to be played and since they had no rink, it was played in Fisher Branch. I hate that rink, I don’t know how many games I have won there but it is not very many.  We put in a less than spirited effort and lost 5-1.  My season draws to a close as well, overall had a good season, no major injuries, scored some goals got into a few fights and had around 150 PIM.  Pretty average season. Hopefully next year will be better.
