Moose Hunts

Most moose hunting is done along the lake shorelines as well as flowages that are coming into the lake at various locations. You do this from the boat and scout the shorelines particularly in areas where you can easily see tracks and signs such as beaches, mud flats or grassy areas.

Each day you need to check these various places to see where the freshest sign is. At these locations, it would be a good idea to stand hunt at day-break and sunset.

During the time you’re not stand hunting, you should always be scouting new areas in search of new sign. If you aren’t seeing much fresh sign, then you will need to hunt further inland off the shoreline.

Transporting another BeautyYou would do this by following the flowage up to beaver ponds and hunting the first ridge running parallel with the lake. If the moose aren’t feeding on the shoreline, they have to be feeding on the upland areas and this sign should be easily recognized. If this is the case, then finding a location to stand hunt in these areas would be productive. In hunting upland areas, you would hunt similar to how you would hunt deer or elk.

PARTY HUNT PLAN
PTrophy Rackarty Hunt Philosophy
Big game hunting is a large part of the resource based tourism economy and therefore the Ontario Moose herd is highly managed. The Ontarion Moose-Bear Allocation Advisory Committee is managing the herd for the bestpossible results. Therefore it's important not to shoot all bulls or all cows. With a high mortality rate, the taking of calves is also recommended. So with this management stratagy in mind we are offeringfor the first time a party hunt. Each 4-man party will be allocated 1-BULL, 1-COW and 2-CALF Tags. Party of 2 people will be allocated 1-BULL and 1-CALF Tag. The benefit of the party hunt is:
  1. We feel the percentage of kills should be close to 100%.
  2. A reduced price for this hunt should make it affordable for alot of first time moose hunters.
  3. Larger bulls should be prevalent with less pressure on the bull population.
  4. This allows us to better manage our area, as we can utilize areas where we have seen lesser numbers of bulls and higher numbers of cows. Previously we'd be looking for an area to produce 4 bulls. We wouldhave to see a high percentage of bulls before we would hunt it. Now with the need to shoot only 1-bull, we can use areas where we haven't seen large number of bulls. Hunting this area with a high number of cows makes for some easy bull hunting during the rut.

Outpost Guidelines

  • One group to the lake per season.  We hunt each lake only one time per year.  This gives each hunter the best opportunity to get a moose without depleting the moose population.
  • Your moose will be brought back to the base camp at no extra charge.
  • Our camp policy is: If you draw blood from your targeted moose, finish the hunt by killing the moose.
  • Be prepared to cut up and transport your moose.  Moose are large and meat must be taken care of as you would meat from deer or beef.
  • It is your responsibility to be certain no meat goes to waste. Therefore, plan accordingly.
