We have had normal temperatures recently. Cool for a few days, then warmer than normal for a few. You really need to wear layers in the morning, then down to a t-shirt for the afternoon. We have a good crew working for us this season, which helps get more work done each day. There has been plenty of progress on our new cabin on Dark Water Lake, and we have opened 4 camps so far. Tomorrow we are heading back north for the week most likely to open the rest of our camps.

Some of the upgrades at the camps this season include:

3 new Lund boats for Vee Lake

New fridges for Cobham Daniel and Findlay lakes

New BBQ for Shearstone lake

Extra set of bunks for Cobham Daniel, there will be 4 bottom bunks there now

Cobham Morley will be getting a new roof and already has a new outhouse

These are just a few of the bigger jobs/ improvements we have planned for the early part of the season. The nice, warm, mostly dry weather makes life so much easier for opening camps and getting the jobs done. 2 of our 3 dockhands have fallen into the lake already and say the water is still very cold!

Here are a few pictures from the last week.

The day we opened Jeanette, it was awesome. Warm and sunny. Flying over the burn to the north is amazing. Not much left but rocks and ash. As we taxied into the cabin at Jeanette lake, we saw a Golden eagle flying with sticks in its claws on its way to the nest. Right behind the Golden was a Bald Eagle bearing down on it, looking to attack. And right on his tail was another Golden eagle. We witnessed the trio coming together a couple of times but eventually lost them as we got closer to the cabin. When we looked back the Bald eagle was headed away from the larger Golden eagles.

My Mom and her husband Siggy built us the kitchen cupboards for Dark Water and even came up to install them. They also finished the trim around on the windows as well as getting the last of the staining and the first coat of varnish on the floor. I know where I get my work ethic from, my Mom. Mom and Siggy put in 2 long days at Dark Water.

It was quite cold the day we opened Loree Lake. As the warm air moved in we had a wild thunderstorm go by and got pelted with 10 minutes of pea sized hail.

The Moose are haunting me already! I went for a ride on Loree lake and noticed a tree across the lake in one of my favorite spots that caught my attention.

I know for a fact that these trees were not rubbed like this during the hunt last fall, because I walked through the areas where I found these. This tree is at least 12 inches across and has the bark stripped up to 8 feet high.

There must have been 20 trees I could see from the water that were rubbed like this. I am already looking forward to chasing those hairy beasts this fall!

We will be finishing the cabin as soon as we can but have to open all of our other camps in preparation for the upcoming season. I will try to let everyone know how the water levels are as soon as I can. It feels great to be back in the bush, I really missed it!

Lake Manitoba has been moving around for a week or so. The next big wind should take out the ice. Depending on the weather, the ice up north should go in about 2 weeks from now. Here are some pictures of the ice around here.

We have returned from the Sportshow in Minneapolis and are beginning to put together our final pieces of the puzzle for the upcoming season. My Mom told me that we are going to have three snows after the crows. We have had one so far. The weather has been great up here, the ice is in bad shape, and it would not hurt my feelings any to see some more snow versus rain to keep the bush moist. Mother Nature has been kind to us, although there is a risk of it being dry this season.

It is looking like it will be a pretty good season for us. Bookings continue to come in and we are gearing up to show all of our old and new guests the trip of a lifetime. The ice will be out earlier than normal but some recent snow storms further north should help out with the water levels, which looked like they were going to be average. It is hard to tell until we actually get on each lake. Spring is fast approaching and there is lots to do. Rena and I will be busy and most likely be in Red Lake before May 1st this year with the construction of our new cabin on Dark Water Lake.

Keep watching our site, I have updated some more of our camp pages with pictures supplied by some of our guests. Thanks!!!

Our website is constantly being updated. We have recently added a printable grocery list to the “What to bring” page for your convenience. You can simply check off the items you want and fax it to us anytime after May 1st. Don’t fax it in the winter, generally 2-4 weeks prior to your trip. Also we have been adding the Photo galleries from our guests who shared pictures with us last season. Check them out to see the beautiful scenery and Trophy Fish caught on our pristine waters. Not all of the camps have the new galleries up yet so keep watching your favorite lake for the updates. Something to keep in mind for 2012, we will be trading hats for pictures. Make sure to bring your digital camera along this summer. Add Amik Outposts on Facebook and “Like” our page.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the show!

Starting on Wednesday, March 28th, Rena and I will be attending the Northwest Sportshow in Minneapolis and be there until Sunday April 1st. Come on down to say hi. It is always good to see past, present, and the new guests! Whether you are an experienced outpost fisherman or a rookie, we can help you by answering any questions you may have and help you plan the details of your trip. We take great pride in seeing our groups of fisherman and families come back from our deluxe outpost cabins telling stories of the huge numbers they caught and released, the trophies they caught and of course…the one that got away!!!

If you have not been fortunate enough to fish with Amik Outposts, you are missing out. Amik Outposts began operating on Virgin Lakes in 1992. In 1994 John and Rena began their journey to becoming the qualified outfitters they are today. Come down, meet them and book a trip. Or simply fill out our Info Request Form to inquire about dates for the 2012 season.
